As soon as he felt a gun barrel poke his ribs, the cop broke out his fists of fury to crack ribs, knock out teeth and fracture a thug’s skull.
Not bad for an officer well into his 80s.
“I love to fight guys who are bigger than I am,” said Hialeah Police Lt. Leo Thalassites, 86, as he recalled fending off a robber outside a Greek restaurant in Coral Gables in 2010.
He disarmed the 6-foot-2, 250-pound “punk” and then beat him unconscious. “For more than half a century, I have taught officers to always be ready.”
Three generations of police officials were indeed ready, two weeks ago, when they crowded into Hialeah City Hall to honor the hulking Thalassites for being America’s oldest active cop.
The International Police Association confirmed that Thalassites is indeed the oldest active law enforcement officer in the United States.
A cross between Clint Eastwood and Jackie Chan, the barrel-chested Thalassites is a mixed-martial arts dynamo who started his police career with what was then known as the Metro-Dade Police Department in 1956. He transferred to Hialeah Police in 1963, and state records show he has been active with the department ever since.
The video shows Officer David Wagoner stopping a black Cadillac with an expired tag on Santa Barbara Boulevard around 12:30 a.m. April 16. After talking briefly with the driver, he walks around to the other side of the vehicle to talk to the passenger, at which point a gun can be seen poking out the window and firing three shots into Wagoner from a few inches away.
Wagoner sticks his arms out before falling back and rolling onto the sidewalk. He lifts himself to his knees and fires seven shots at the fleeing vehicle.
“I’m hit Cape. I need a medic. Black Cadillac heading north. White male, purple shorts,” he tells dispatch.
Three witnesses leave their vehicles to check on Wagoner, asking him if he’s OK and where he is hit. “I’m not sure,” he says. “I don’t want to look at this point.”
I know this is a week or so old, but for those of you who have not seen it, I would categorieze this as “must-see” video. This is from the Hispanic Leadership Network Conference in Miami Florida on January 27th. Marco Rubio is one of those Freshmen Republicans in Washington, but his star shines bright on the horizon. I expect many good things from this man in the future, and there couldn’t be a more important time in America’s history for people of Rubio’s character to become involved in politics to help right this ship.
…when the choices that are put before us today are dangerous ones, because if we choose this path of pitting people against each other, if we buy into this notion that our economy really can’t grow fast enough for all of us to prosper so we’re going to have to somehow empower government to distribute the wealth of this country among us, we’ve chosen to become like everybody else. We’ve chosen to become like the countries that your parents and grandparents came here to get away from. And that’s a powerful message. And that’s the message that we need to deliver. And that’s the message we need to work on delivering. It’s a winning message, but it’s a difficult message to get to because the gateway issue of immigration stands in the minds of so many people who we live next to and love.
Man, oh, MAN, Congressman Lt. Col. Allen West (R-FL) really got under Bob Beckel’s collar yesterday. You see, it seems that West’s diatribe telling Lefties to take their progressive, socialist agendas to Europe, the bottom of the sea, or wherever they like, but take it out of the United States of America! This got Bob’s boxers in a bunch. Here’s the exchange from The Five‘s panel:
I don’t care what Bob says, Greg Gutfeld is right; amped up and hateful rhetoric is welcomed from black liberals, but let a black conservative say something incendiary like this and the left goes NUTS!
Stay tuned, West has a retort… next post.
On The Five today, Bob Beckel and the panel respond to Lt. Col. Allen West saying this morning on Fox & Friends that Bob owed him an apology for his on-air tirade against him for remarks he made at a FL GOP event regarding Obama, Reid, Pelosi & Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Bob refuses to do so, and says today is where it ends, although he polls the panel on whether or not he should apologize. Watch the exchange here:
“Take your message of equality of achievement, take your message of economic dependency, take your message of enslaving the entrepreneurial will and spirit of the American people somewhere else. You can take it to Europe, you can take it to the bottom of the sea, you can take it to the North Pole, but get the hell out of the United States of America.”
Hoooah! Can we get West to run 3rd party for POTUS? I’d be ready to start the “American Patriot Party” right now.
