I’ve had just about all I can stand of this feigned self-righteous indignation I’m reading and hearing about from all corners of America about BP Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg’s “small people” comment. Who in the hell do you all think you are? Have you ever heard the term “ugly American?” If not, all this whining, crying, and gnashing of teeth is precisely an example of where that term comes from.
And, no, I’m not giving BP a “free pass’ on anything, nor am I saying they have no price to pay for the ACCIDENT in the Gulf, but you guys have got to give this “small people” comment/non-issue a damn rest already.
In case you’ve been on Mars lately, here’s the allegedly offensive remark by BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg:
“I hear comments sometimes that large oil companies are greedy companies or don’t care, but that is not the case with BP. We care about the small people.”
From a piece in the Tampa Bay news, we have this lovely gem:
…Svanberg is Swedish, and his comments may have been an unintentional slight. Either way, people in the Gulf Coast were not amused. “They can say he didn’t mean it that way, but that’s how they think of us,” said Lyn Ridge, a commercial contractor in Louisiana. “They can’t keep their foot out of their mouth.” By Wednesday evening, Svanberg had apologized.
Hey, Lyn…how do you know how he meant it? How are you certain that’s how “they think of us”? Is it because of the 24/7 demonization of BP by the Obama administration and the idiot Left? English is not Mr. Svanger’s first language, you fool. Have we not excoriated them enough?
I have a challenge for you, Lyn: go study Swedish for a while then take a trip to the Nordics. Strike up a general discussion with a local there, and try to translate “foot in your mouth” into Swedish. Now, mind you, you must do it 100% perfectly or else the Swedes could take offense because truthfully, you might have just told them their sisters have sex with goats. Oh, and they probably won’t understand “y’all” either. (I can say this because I’m in the south, too.)
You and every other moron out there need to pull your heads out of your asses, and shed the victim mask for just a little while. Don’t get your panties in such a twist over a stupid phrase that was most likely lost in translation.
And since I’m not offended at being lumped in with the other “small people,” I don’t find it necessary for me to do the same translation of “panties in a twist.” It’s called a colloquialism. ”Small people” does not necessarily mean the same thing to an ESL person as it does to a native English-speaking person; vice versa for your “keep their foot out of their mouth” nonsense. See if you can keep yours out of your own.
