How Do Non-Faith Initiatives Stimulate the Economy?

According to OneNewsNow, there’s a very scary provision in the current stimulus package. Here’s what Jay Sekulow reports:

Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the American Center for Law & Justice, tells OneNewsNow there is a provision of the act that actually allows for funds to be given by the federal government in the form of grants for renovation of existing colleges and universities.

“But when you read a little bit further into this legislation, there’s a specific prohibition on two things,” the attorney explains. “One, if the university itself is a religiously based or faith-based institution, it does not qualify. And if the facility that is being renovated allows religious worship to take place, it also does not qualify.”

Specifically, the provision reads that stimulus funds may not be used for “modernization, renovation, or repair of facilities — (i) used for sectarian instruction, religious worship, or a school or department of divinity; or (ii) in which a substantial portion of the functions of the facilities are subsumed in a religious mission.”

Under that provision, according to Sekulow, many schools would bar on-campus worship or even Bible study because it will put federal funding in jeopardy. That, he says, should raise a warning flag in a federal courthouse.

The story continues:

Sekulow states that a “troubling pattern” is developing regarding the use of taxpayer money — and that this provision is the latest example. He contrasts it with the new administration’s swift move to make federal funds available for abortion-providers overseas.

“There is a priority problem in Washington,” he says in a press release. “This is not what ‘economic stimulus’ is about. We know that the American people don’t want their tax dollars used for discriminatory measures. That’s why this provision must be removed now.”

The attorney says if the discriminatory provision is not removed from the stimulus package and is approved and signed into law, the ACLJ will challenge it in federal court.

Can somebody please tell me what’s happening to my country? Why is this in the stimulus package? And really… for either side… why is this part of a plan to stimulate the U.S. economy? Even if I were on the side of anti-faith education, what part of this provision stimulates our economy? I’m so sick of politics as usual, especially the rush to pass this excrement sandwich called an economic stimulus bill. Even Barack Obama admitted that a stimulus bill was indeed a spending bill. But he also said in his campaign that NO pork projects would ever be allowed to be attached to critical legislation. So how the hell did this happen, and is it okay that this package should be approved and voted for?

I only have one 4-word response: Hell if I know.

God help us I'm so f**king tired of blind and stupid morons who have been in freakin denial for decades and are now whining about 'how did this happen.'

If you freakin don't KNOW then understand this. Its been coming for years and few of us were willing to see the reality of it. IF WE DON'T STOP THEM NOW WE ARE TOAST. You whiners are almost as sickening and disgusting as the emotionally retarded, leftist bedwetters who caused it.

Sarah, do you not recognize a bit of irony when you read it? Why do you come here, read this and get all sanctimonious on me and others who feel this way? We KNOW how it happened. We are the voices that have been SCREAMING into the endless night, wondering why nobody will hear us! That's what we've been doing, and we KNOW how it happened. Jeez. Lighten up, Francis.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't renovating colleges and universities lead to jobs that pay people money? I don't see that as pork. I do find the religious exemption a tad ridiculous though. There are numerous excellent schools across the nation that are religious, some with liberal points of view, many conservative. Everyone needs jobs though. It shouldn't be limited.
