Well, as I predicted, the People’s Choice Awards, hosted by Queen Latifah, turned into an Obama love-fest, although he was seldom mentioned by name. There were more inferences than anything, but the intro was overt. Latifah informed the audience that their response any time she asked them a question would be “YES, WE CAN!”
She went through several artists in the front couple of rows, including Robin Williams, all of whom answered obediently “Yes we can!” Then she got to Kid Rock. Kid said ‘um, I really don’t want to follow Robin Williams,’ seeming reluctant to chant the mantra. See, if my memory serves me right, Kid Rock is not a liberal. Latifah goes at him a second time, and at the audience’s relenting, he gives up the nauseating phrase.
Fast forward to one of the first awards, which Kid Rock was presenting, and as he approached the mic, the crowd was chanting “Yes we can!” Kid Rock uses his hand in a brush-aside gesture, and says “all right, yes we can…I get it.”
The sweet subtlety, I’m sure, was felt by many.
AFTERTHOUGHT: I have watched a few episodes of House, and thought “hey, I might buy the first few seasons on DVD to watch,†but that all changed tonight. On accepting an award for Best Male Actor in a TV Show (I think), Hugh Laurie proclaimed something along the lines of ‘it seems we’ve all been making A LOT of right choices lately…in fact, if I could reference the Peoples Choice from 8 years ago…’
So, I think I’ll skip House from now on. And I won’t be buying any of the previous seasons, preferring to save my money for better things. Like sending packages to the troops.
