It is just as simple-minded to claim that America is directly responsible for the attacks in Mumbai as it is to ignore how our government's self-serving, and quite often violent, policies in the Middle East fuel anger in a region which is already suffering from an extreme amount of religious tension. Isn't it about time we as Americans take a more nuanced approach to understanding this conflict that we are, like it or not, irrevocably bound to? We owe it to our fellow Americans, who died at the hands of terrorists on September 11th, to do our best to try to understand how we became entangled in this conflict; to accept responsibility for the elements of terror which our government is responsible for, and to focus our energy on extricating ourselves from this quagmire before more innocent American lives are lost to this conflict.

This is a complicated situation and to thrust blame solely upon fundamentalist Islam is simply irresponsible and is an exercise in delusion - to thrust the blame solely upon America is just plain wrong.
