    Okay JEB:
this thread was about Fred Thompson as a candidate for US President.

If you want to keep your comments on the imagined history of the Republican party, something about your perception of Medicare and prescription drugs, and more complaining about Bush, then go ahead, keep posting.
  • Jeb
    LTCPMax,

There is no evidence in the modern republican party to support your assertion that they are not supporters of big government. The numbers tell the story.

And the fact that they throw money at their contributors while we get the shaft is undeniable. No negotiating prescription drug prices in their new entitlement program? What's conservative about that?

I don't want a good speaker for President. I want someone who has ideas and who can solve problems. Not someone who promises to keep doing what Bush is doing, except more irresponsibly.
  • ltcpmax
    JEB:

no, you didnt read it correctly. I think Thompson, because of his public speaking skills, will be more palatable to your colleagues that condemn President Bush for public speaking gaffes.

And you are so right... always been the DAMN Republicans that want to enlarge governmenet, increase social programs, and redistribute wealth... are you kidding me?

But I agree...where does a candidate get off thinking he should support and enhance the military and defense spending during a war? ANd prescription drug coverage...damn old folks on Medicare, screw them! Just because pharmaceutical expenses are the biggest fastest rising component of health care costs, no reason insurance programs should address that!

Keep up your ranting... but please take your blood pressure pills, you obviously need it.
  • Jeb
Basically, you're saying that Thompson can speak Englsh reasonably well, unlike the rest of the contenders, right? There's not an original thought in the man's head.

'Respectable' performance in the Senate? Your statement about his 'good attendence' record is faint praise. yet you try to make it sound like a sign of greatness. Does that mean he'll vacation less than Mr. 28%? Republicans have such low, low expectations from their candidates.

My assertion that debt would continue to explode under Thompson - or any of the other top contenders - was based on their unquestioning support of massive defense spending, Prescription drugs and other wealth redistribution shemes that the Republicans LOVE. They have happily spent hundreds of billions of dollars on them over the past 6 years. Our money. There is no real discussion, outside of Ron Paul, about real changes that must be made to our federal finances and priorities. Republicans used to OWN this issue. Now no one in their right mind would say Republicans have bettered our national financial position.

Fundamentally, the major candidates are all proposing a continuation of what Bush, who is increasingly unpopular even on the right, has been doing for the last 7 disasterous years. Fred Thompson is just like the rest of them. Oh... he'd pardon Scooter Libby. Big whoop! So we know he condones criminality, like the other major candidates.

And you want to make him President because of that?

do you people have no brains or do you just think Americans are stupid and therefore best served by an average man because he looks like a leader on teevee?

    JEB:

who was your "source" for the statement you provided about Mr. Thompson's performance/liking a steak dinner, etc? Unattributed allegations, imagine a guy that wants to keep his schedule under control and likes to eat dinner. DAMN HIM.

Regarding issues within the military. Certainly there are problems. Gee, the Active duty military is roughly 1/3 the size it was when I started my first active duty tour. And we hadn't had a raise in years, and the Liberal DEMOCRATS had stripped and scraped the military structure to the point that we cannot easily sustain this operational tempo...it is revealing long planted budget shortfalls and allotment problems, along with too much pork barrelled defense contract steerage by both parties. How you link that to the Prescription Drug benefit and Medicare I had trouble following!

Fred Thompson DID have a respectible performance record as Senator, as well as afterwards as a politically active nationally recognized republican. He offers reasoned commentary on many issues. And, considering the bullship criticism that is constantly heard about President Bush's speaking style, Fred T. will provide, in addition to insightful thought and leadership, a more polished speaking presence. Because apparently, the liberal press doesnt care about results, just pronunciation of words. ("Nuclear" really does sound different (not WRONG!) when spoken with a Texas accent). So Mr. Thompson will also be able to address some of the superficial concerns of the democrats.
  • Jeb
    LTCPMax,

Sorry, regarding the breaking US military, from Sept. 2006:

"General Barry McCaffrey, now retired, said of the current state of the US military, "I think, arguably, it's the worst readiness condition the US Army has faced since the end of Vietnam." This isn't a big surprise when we consider the facts that many soldiers are already into their third combat tour, frequent deployments have cut training time at home in half, and two thirds of all Army combat units are rated not ready for combat."

Regarding the spendthrift Republican front runners, there is literally no evidence to suggest deficits will decline if they win. They plan to continue the Iraq occupation, they plan to "transform" the military. The Prescription drug bill will still be bleeding the treasury, and they'd probably try to privatize social security at a huge cost to us, by the way, if they could. Any savings they talk about are marginal.

So now that I have answered your questions, why do you think Fred Thompson is a good or even the best candidate?
  • Jeb
    LTCPMax,

You mean offer substance to the group like this:

    http://msunderestimated.com/2007/05/22/rodham-r...

Would you like some cheese with your whine? Hey, did you know that Fred Thompson was for a woman's right to choose before he was against it? Are you going to chant "flip-flop, flip-flop" at him? Maybe put a purple band aid on your face to insult his Vietnam service? Ooops. He sat out Vietnam. Gee, I guess he didn't realize we were fighting WWIII, did he?

Here's what I've read about Thompson and it's not encouraging.

"he has a reputation for resisting a demanding schedule and is undisciplined as a campaigner. In a recent speech to California Republicans, Thompson began with some jokes that were well received but then abandoned his carefully written text and rambled through remarks that left many in the audience underwhelmed. His high school football coach in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., told the Nashville Tennessean, "He was smart, but he was lazy. He probably could have been a straight-A student if he'd applied himself." With eight years in the Senate, his legislative record was thin. Says a former adviser: "While the Senate is filled with ambitious men who aren't in a rush to get home at night, Senator Thompson kept a lean formal schedule, did the bare minimum to get by and then hightailed [it] to the Prime Rib or the Capital Grille."

We already have a lazy man in the White House. We need another lazy man like we need additional holes in our heads.
  • Fred Jones
Jeb, like many progressives, would not like to see Fred Thompson run. Thompson can rally the base, not an easy task, and anyone who can do that can win against the wishy washy self-loathing Democrat lineup we have today.
  • ltcpmax
    Hey JEB:

you offer little in terms of intelligent comment or analysis. YOu seem as superficial and annoying as Orion.
Do you have anything of actual substance to offer for the group? You assert he was a lazy politician (statistics? he actually had a both a good attendance/participation record while a US Senator, as well as being actually involved in developing and/or sponsoring legislation)

You make some vague comments that seem to imply the national debt will continue to rise in direct linkage to Mr. THompson's candidacy or presidency? Basis for such a statement?

You react to his recommendations that we remember there is more to consider than just Iraq, and we need to continue to transform the military to meet tomorrows threats as well as today's. Both are sage statements. Your allegations of broken military and a rudderless boondoggle are both democrapic sound bites. Cite your facts or expertise in military strategic initiatives?

Stand up, speak clearly, make a coherent point, or stay off the blog, PLEASE.
  • Jeb
Is 44 Thompson's IQ or the number of years that he did NOT work as a lobbyist? I know it's not his 2nd wife's age because she's only 40 years old.
  • orion's mom
He came so close to explaining Islam's threat. Wish there had been an immigration question.
  • Jeb
This is pretty cool. A free infomercial for a guy who's about to declare. He probably promised Murdoch he'd loosen up media ownership laws even further so that less than 5 "liberal" media conglomerates can monopolize our "liberal" press even more.

How old is Thompson? He's a charisma vacuum who was a lobbyist (for 20 years!), an actor and lazy politician. This is the great Republican hope? I'm being crushed by your low expectations!

And he wants us to think beyond Iraq AND transform our military which is breaking as it's bogged down in the rudderless, catastrophic boondoggle, Iraq? First things first, cowboy! How about some specifics? Are we just supposed to throw more money at Iraq and the military?

Do any of the Republicans have workable ideas or are we just supposed to believe that they give some thought with regards to, finances, for example?

I guarantee our national debt will continue to explode if any of the top Republican candidates are elected. but then I guess no one here cares that we're already beholden to the Saudi's the Chinese, the Japanese, etc...
