Can you believe this? This is nuttier than the military funeral protests! I heard this morning from Megan Kendall on Fox News that the Westboro Baptist Church is going to protest the memorial service of the little Amish girls who were viciously executed at their schoolhouse. UN-freakin-BELIEVABLE!!!

The Denizens of Decency

Heidi at Euphoric Reality has this also, as well as the .pdf that you can view here of their press release stating their intentions. I’m writing the Patriot Guard Riders about this, because this cannot be tolerated.

Heidi & Kit have all the coverage, and you won’t believe this outrage! I’ll have more on this later after I hear back from my state’s PGR leader.

Jay at Stop the ACLU is on this, as is HotAir.

***UPDATES***

12:18 P.M. ESTMike Gallagher has Shirley Phelps Roper on the radio right now, and he’s offering a deal. He’s going to trade them an hour of national airtime if she promises they’ll leave those girls’ funerals alone. He first offered her and her “church” $50,000, but she wouldn’t take that. But Shirley is going to agree to the airtime, but she says only if it’s before the funerals. She said “we won’t go to the funerals.” Yeah, right…

12:38 P.M. EST – Shirley-girl is going to do it. The WBC is going to put out a press release to that effect, and that’s part of the deal. They are going to do this and in exchange, they’re promising to leave ALL of the girls’ funerals and memorials alone. The rub is Mike’s producer had to agree to let them have the hour on-air with no arguments, no rebuttals, and Mike doesn’t know if they’ll take calls. Mike said his producer took one for the team because he has to produce and sit there and listen to it. The first of the funerals, Mike believes, will be this Friday so look for that “hour of sour” sometime tomorrow. Blech

And for the other bloggers out there who may be PGR members, please don’t post on their forums about this. I did and really I meant no harm, but the site admin took my post down because he said they are trying not to focus on the WBC anymore. He also said that hearing/reading stuff about them might traumatize some of the members. And he’s right. So he took my post down from their forum, and I’m okay with that. I realize he was right.

2:36 P.M. EST – Mike Gallagher’s just received the faxed Press Release from Shirley Phelps that they have agreed to stop their protests at the funerals, and she will have an hour on Mike’s show tomorrow. Don’t know what hour it will be. Oh, by the way… Mike said Shirley told him that some of the signs they were going to carry at the funerals were going to say “YOUR DAUGHTER IS A WHORE!” Lovely people, huh?

I wondered this out loud at my blog, and am really interested if anyone has an answer. If Fox News is accurate in reporting that Phelps-Roper stated:

the church had planned to cancel the protests if given media time on radio and television as a platform to espouse Westboro’s beliefs.

then, could this be construed as either extortion or blackmail? Extortion because it sounds as if they demanded something of monetary value in exchange for them not carrying out a threat. According to the definition of extortion, the threat has to be violent and/or illegal. If it was determined that their right to protest was legal, under the first amendment, then it could be construed as blackmail, which involves an action that is legal unless money or property is conceded.

Now, if it were extortion or blackmail, couldn't this be actionable? I mean, I would love to see these people go down…and I hate it that the media is giving in to their tantrums for attention.
