I Miss My Friend….

July 8, 2006 Crime, Tragedy, True Heroes View Comments

I have no words….I just got the official “officer down” email today, even though I knew it had happened. But the email alert just reminded me again. Dennis, you didn’t deserve this. Nobody did. And we miss, need and love you.

Step, I miss you so much, and it hurts me so very deeply to know how you were taken down. I just pray to God that it was quick, and that you just went to sleep. But I know that it didn’t matter to your brethren officers on the scene as they screamed at you “HANG WITH US, STEP! DON’T LEAVE US… STAY WITH US, STEP!”

I can only hope that you were already walking with Jesus. Please help us understand, and give us comfort in our time of loss. But also remind us of what we had with you while you were with us. We should rejoice in the fact you were part of our lives, but it doesn’t make the parting any easier.

I can’t believe this asshole shot and killed you because he didn’t want to go back to jail! Well, now he’s going straight to hell. What a stupid-ass reason to shoot a police officer. I just don’t understand it….. and I probably never will. I can’t imagine anyone thinking that their escape from time behind bars merits killing an innocent cop. Damnit, Dennis… why you? Why did you have to be the one who caught him? You didn’t need to be a cowboy for us. We all knew you were a tough guy, but we didn’t want to lose you this way. I guess we have to let you go, but it’s not easy.

Watch out for all of us, brother… wait for us on the other side. Stand with St. Christopher and we’ll be safer with both of you watching over all of us.

I love you, Dennis… and I will always miss you. And together, regardless of the plane, we will walk the thin blue line together for eternity.

1* forever.

P.S. I realize there’s a typo in the picture above. It says “Years of service: 1700.” It should read 10+. But that’s a small thing all things considered. 1700 might be a correct number, because Step was a cop for all ages.

  • A year later, we, the community and the Patriot Guard, still remember. Thank you Detective Stepnowski; we owe you and all of your fellow LEO more than we could ever repay.
  • Amy, I thank you so much... Step was so important to us, and law enforcement as a whole has lost a very important brother to a ruthless, heartless bastard who had no regard for life. I know Step is watching over us now... I feel safer, but no less sad, because I miss my friend.
